something we noticed - TSRW vs. CTU with simple recolors

Last night, [personal profile] gelydh was telling me about something odd she noticed with some t-shirts she'd downloaded from another creator. They were really cute, and she was really looking forward to using them, only... they didn't show up quite how she was expecting.

She uses my default replacement shirts, which have a slightly better shaped mesh and different textures, along with a change bumpmap to allow for more variation in styles. The shirts she downloaded were showing up with what appeared to be the original EAxis mesh and textures, which was momentarily confusing. The creator had used the TSR Workshop to create these shirts, so I decided to do a bit of poking around in the file to see what I could find out.

Turns out TSRW likes to include a whole buttload of uneccessary bits and pieces in the files, bloating them, and subsequently bloating your downloads folder.




First up, file size. This is before compressorizing either file, but even after, the TSRW-created file weighed in at 293K, which is almost 13 times the size of the compressorized CTU-created file (23K compressed).

Why such a huge difference? A quick peek at the inards of the files explains:

Compare that to the inside of the file made with TSRW. The GEOMs are the repeated meshes, and everything aside from the IMG and CASP are parts relating back to those meshes. Remember, this was nothing more than a simple graphic added to a basegame t-shirt; everyone has this mesh in their game already. There's no reason to include it in the file.


I'm sure the TSRW is great for some things -- people seem to be able to make nice enough objects with it, I suppose -- but I'm not sure it's such a good idea to make simple clothing recolors with it. How many multitudes of the same mesh do you want to have floating around your downloads folder? The CTU isn't perfect, but for something simple like a graphic shirt I believe it's the better program of the two to use.

While I'm biased against TSR for unrelated reasons, my purpose for posting this information is simply to keep you, the downloader and creator, informed.

I have no doubt that you are correct the TSR workshop is including more resources than necessary. However I believe when CC in sims3packs are installed into the DCCache files the CC is compressed again. The copies stored in the Downloads folder don't affect game play and can be moved or deleted. And it doesn't seem that the extra "junk" included in the files affects playing --- or at least it hasn't in my game. I'm not saying that they shouldn't fix it so the extra stuff is removed. If the stuff isn't necessary it shouldn't be in there.
I love your stuff, and I download it, and try to use it, but I always end up taking it out because it slows down my game too much. My DCCache folder is about 3.5 gigs (filled with ea-store and other CC from sims3packs) and the game runs fine -- starts in about 45 sec and uses about 1.5 - 2 gigs of RAM during play. If I add even a few package files to my mods folder (totaling less than 150MB) it quadruples the loading time and ups the amount of RAM the games uses by at least 500MB. And yes, I have checked the files with the Dashboard tool and used process monitor to look for problem files. Neither, has found any problems.

TS3 - Jacob - Computer
I'm not looking for a sims3pack vs package file debate, but honestly I've personally had nothing but trouble with sims3packs! It would have been nice if TS3 were as CC-friendly as TS2 had been. :P

When someone offers both sims3pack and .package file versions of their downloads, more often than not they've done what I've done here and extracted the sims3pack to get the package version. This is where things seem to go wrong, at least in my experience. Several times I've had the CC not show up at all until I've reimported it using the dbc... option in s3pe.

I'm really not begrudging anyone who chooses to use sims3packs, and I do know that people have had problems with both them and .packages; however, we did want to inform people of this. Especially in situations that prompted this post in the first place, with my default replacement meshes.

Thanks for letting us know about your issues with our CC. I'm going to try something with the next set I upload, and I'd really appreciate you letting me know if it's changed anything for you.
